Free Credit Report Info – Acceptable Forms of Identification

Free Credit Report InfoIn order to protect your privacy while processing your request for a consumer free credit report, the consumer reporting agencies will need specific information to make sure that your personal information is secure.

You may need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. If you have moved in the last two years, you may have to provide your previous address as well.

In addition, you may be required to supply some information that only you would know, such as the amount of your monthly mortgage payment etc. Each credit bureau may ask you for different information because the information each has in your file may come from different sources.

You may also be asked to provide a copy of your driver’s license, a bank statement or utility bill.  When calling by phone, you may be asked to identify a company with which you have an account and information such as monthly payment amount for identification purposes.





If you are contacting any of the three credit bureaus by mail in order to obtain a free credit report or dispute any of the information in it, please make sure to include a copy of a document from each of the two categories below:
One item to validate ID such as:   

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Social Security Card
  • Passport
  • State ID
  • Military ID
  • Birth Certificate
  • Court documents for legal name change
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Pay stub
  • W2 form
  • 1099 form
  • Divorce Decree

AND one item to validate address such as:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Utility bill with the correct address (Gas, Water, Cable or Residential phone bill)
  • Mortgage statement
  • Bank statement
  • State ID
  • Cell phone bill
  • Pay stub
  • W2 form
  • 1099 form
  • Rental Lease Agreement/House Deed
